Perennial wildflower that looks very similar to a nettle but, instead, has whorls of pretty yellow flowers from April to July. Leaves are green with silver mottling. Woodland plant that is now becoming rare in the wild. Ht 2 ft (60 cm). It is sometimes referred to as Yellow Deadnettle.
The plants name comes from the Greek galen,, meaning weasel, and bdolos, meaning stench. The awful smell given off by the plant meant that it was seen as providing protection from evil spirits by warding them off with its smell when the stems or leaves are crushed. Hence the name Weasel Stench.
Yellow Archangel is a good source of nectar and pollen for bumblebees. The caterpillars of the Yellow Speckled moth feed on the leaves. Bees land on the lower petal of the flowers and become dusted with pollen as they enter and leave the flower.
Plant in a damp, shady spot. Provides good ground cover. Cut back to 6 8 ins if the plant gets leggy.
