Buy Wild Basil and other wildflowers, herbs, cottage garden plants, seeds and native hedging in our online shop

Perennial wildflower and herb. Member of the Mint family. Downy hairs and square stems. Grows to about 32 ins (80 cm) high. Flowers July to September small pinky-mauve flowers, looks like Marjoram. Found in the wild in woodland margins, scrub, hedgerows and rough grassland.

Clinopodium comes from the Greek for foot stool, referring to the hairy bracts which form a stool upon which the flowers sit.

Wild Basil is nectar-rich so bees, butterflies and moths are attracted to the plant. Can be attacked by the mite that causes the flowerheads to thicken and become covered with white hairs. The fresh leaves can be used in cooking. Strewing herb.

Plant in shade.
