WHITE CLOVER (trifolium repens)

Buy wildflowers, herbs, native hedging, seeds and cottage garden plants in our online shop

Creeping perennial wildflower and herb with ball-shaped clusters of white flowers. Also known as Baa-lambs, Curl-doody, Pussyfoot and White Sookies. The plant produces creeping runners that root at nodes. As the plant is a legume it fixes nitrogen in the soil so is often found in lawns with low fertility.

Host plant for caterpillars of the Cloudy Wing Skipper and Orange and Clouded Sulphur moths. Nectar source for Viceroys and Silver Blues. Indeed, so much nectar it produces that it was common for children in olden days to suck the nectar from the flowerheads known as honeysuckles. Bees also like the plant, as do ducks. It has been used as a forage plant for cattle and poultry and as a cover crop to stabilise bare soil.

Native American Indians made a tea from the flowers for coughs and fever. Has been used to treat rheumatism and gout. A pickle can also be made from the flowers place the flowers in a jar of vinegar and honey (to each 4 oz of vinegar add a tbs of honey), seal and use a week later.

White Clover is believed by some to be the original Shamrock of Ireland. The early Celts regarded it as a charm against evil spirits. It was also believed to be lucky because if you had a clover leaf on you you would be able to detect witches and good fairies.

Plant in sun.
