Found on chalk and limestone. Red berries in autumn turn black later. Prior to this the tree is full of clusters of fragrant white flowers. Member of the Honeysuckle family. Deciduous. Underside of leaves are covered with dense, white, silky hairs. Flowers from May to June.
The coppiced shoots are pliable and were used for tying bundles of sticks and besum brooms. The berries are good for birds and animals.
Plant in any soil but does best in chalk and limestone. Ok for coastal areas and exposed windy sites. Plant in sun or partial shade.
