Perennial wildflower with small, thin, dark green leaves and small, pink, starry flowers. Also known as Sea Pink, Cliff Clover, Ladies' Cushions. Another of its names, Heugh daisy, comes from the Scottish "heugh" = cliff. Whole plant forms a dense clump. Good for the rockery and seaside garden. Ht 4 - 8 ins (10 - 20 cm). Flowers April to May. Found on shingle, dunes, cliffs and stone walls near the sea Name possibly derives from its compact shape which serves to conserve the plant's water supply.

Good nectar plant for butterflies, and moths - particularly the Amulet, Thrift Clearwing, Black Banded and Feathered Ranunculus moths. The Granville Fritillary butterfly on the Isle of Wight is partial to Thrift. Grows well in wet, dry soil or infertile soil. Very salt tolerant. Take basal cuttings in July or August. Trim into shape.
