Perennial wildflower, member of the Pea family. Pretty pink and white pea-like flowers growing to a height of 12 ins (30 cm). The plant got its name from its ability to arrest (stop) the harrow in old meadows. Flowers July to September. Often found in grassland. Also known as Lady-whin and Sitfast.
Spreads well by means of long, tough underground runners. Food plant of the Restharrow moth and the Silver Studded Blue butterfly. The Lulworth Skipper butterfly is also quite partial to the plant.
Plant in sun, preferably in a grassy area.
