Plant out in not too an exposed site as it may get damaged during winter.
Cut down to soil level in autumn, and divide every three years.
Hardy perennial. Also known as Jupiter's Beard. Fluffy masses of small red or white/pink flowers on 3 ft stems. Flowers smell of vanilla. Self-seeds well. Found on dry banks, walls and railway cuttings and shingle. Attractive to butterflies (particularly Small Tortoiseshell), bees and moths (particularly the Elephant Hawk and Hummingbird Hawk). Seed used to be used in embalming.
