Perennial deciduous climber with scented yellow flowers, tinged reddy-mauve, from June to September, followed by red berries (poisonous). Also known as Woodbine. The name periclymenoum comes from Periclymunus, one of the Argonauts in Greek mythology who had the power to change shape at will Honeysuckle flowers change colour and shape. The lonicera part of the name is named after Adam Loncier, a sixteenth-century German botanist. Periclymenum comes from the Greek perikleia, meaning I entwine.

Plant Honeysuckle to scramble amongst a hedge or by a door so that the scent dominates every time you walk out. Its strong scent in the evening will attract moths, particularly hawk moths. Black flies tend to like the plant in spring but tolerate them for they will provide food for useful garden predators such as ladybirds, lace wings and baby birds. It also provides food for long-tongued bumblebees. Blackcaps, blackbirds, robins, thrushes and tits love the berries and seeds after the flowers have gone. The dense habit of the plant makes ideal nesting conditions. Some birds, eg, the Pied Flycatcher, use Honeysuckle bark in their nests. This particular bird is only found in western Britain. Goats also like the plant. White Admiral caterpillars and butterflies will feed on the plant as will Convolvulus and Pine Hawk moths, as well as caterpillars of the Lilac beauty, Orange, and Early Toothed Striped moths. Dormice will strip the bark at the base of the stem.

Honeysuckle was alleged, many years ago, to protect from evil and protect cattle. It was a symbol of fidelity and love if placed in a young girls bedroom she will dream of love! It was also believed that if Honeysuckle was brought indoors then a wedding would soon ensue. Placing Honeysuckle over a cowshed door would benefit them. Rub Honeysuckle flowers on the forehead to heighten psychic awareness.

Honeysuckle was a favourite plant of Anglo-Saxon pleasure gardens. During Victorian times girls were not allowed to bring Honeysuckle indoors because it was supposed to bring on erotic dreams. Chinese believe that prolonged use of the plant will increase life expectancy. One old folk legend tells of a witch who treated sick people by passing them three times through a Honeysuckle garland.

Infusion of Honeysuckle leaves was used in treating flu, to help reduce temperature and ease coughing (do not attempt this without first consulting a qualified herbalist!) The leaves also produce an antibiotic for treating intestinal conditions. The leaves and flower buds contain salicylic acid, an active Aspirin ingredient. Used for asthma and nervous headache. Tincture for skin irritation.

Prefers rich soil and light shade. However, will tolerate any soil but needs sun to be at its best and light shade to the roots. Therefore, plant leafy plants at its base to shield it. Prune, if necessary, in spring, removing one third of the wood to ground level each year.
