Vigorous hardy perennial wildflower and herb with pretty frothy pinky-purple or white flowers - also called Raspberries and Cream because of its pretty flowers. Flowers July to September. It gets its name due to the similarity of its leaves to Cannabis, but is not related to Cannabis or the hemp plant! Used to be known as Holy Rope because of the hemp connection, and Thoroughwort, St John's Herb and Ague Weed. Found in damp or marshy places, sun or partial shade, although rare in Scotland.
Good plant for butterflies, moths, hoverflies and honey bees. The seedheads provide food for the caterpillars of a the following moths - Wormwood Pug, V-Pug, Lime Speck, Marsh Pug, Gem and Scarce Burnished. Also a dye plant. Peacock and Comma butterflies are also attracted to the plant.
Has been used medicinally for many ailments, including rheumatism, arthritis, dropsy, liver problems and external sores. It is also a laxative, emetic, diuretic and a tonic herb, stimulating the immune system and arresting tumour growth. It is used in homeopathy for flu.
Will grow in deep shade.
