Maiden Pink (dianthus deltoides) 
   

P.  Creeping plant with many tiny green leaves and cerise Pink flowers.  Mat-forming.  Sun or partial shade. 



Marsh Valerian (valeriana dioica) 
   

P.  Umbels of pink or white flowers from April  to July.  Ht about 1 ft (30 cm).  Found on marshes and damp meadows.

Marshmallow (althaea officinalis) 
   
P.  Pink or white flowers in late summer.  Native wildflower of marshes so would feel at home by a pond.  Root derivative is used to make marshmallow confectionary.  Many medicinal properties.  Ht 3 - 4 ft (90 - 122 cm).  Food plant ofPainted Lady butterfly caterpillars and supports the rare Marhsmallow moth.

Meadow Clary (salvia pratensis) 
   
HP.  WF.  Very rare and protected plant.  member of the Sage family with scented leaves when crushed and purple flowers.  Ht 1 - 3 ft (30 - 90 cm).  Meadow plant.  Flowers June and July.  Food plant of the Brown Spot Pinion, Hebrew Character, Powdered Quaker and Emperor moths, hoverflies and bees.  Sun.

Meadow Rue, Greater (thalictrum aquilegifolium) 
   

P.  Large dense panicles of pink flowers from June to July.  Moist or wet soil.

Meadow Rue, Lesser (thalictrum minus) 
   

P. Creamy green flowers from June to August.  meadow plant.  Maidenhair type leaves.  Ht about 3 ft (90 cm).

Monkeyflower (mimmulus guttatus) 
   
HP.  Ht 18 ins (45 cm).  Large bright yellow flowers, bit like Snapdragons.  Good for damp/wet spots.  Spreads well.  Flowers summer to autumn.

Musk Mallow (malva moschata) 
   

HP.  Found in hedgerows, pastures and roadsides.  Large white or pink flowers from July to September.  Ht 2 - 3 ft (30 - 60 cm).  Bee plant and food plant of the Mallow Skipper and Painted Lady butterflies.  Fruits are edible and taste like peanuts apparently.

Navelwort (umbilicus rupestris) 
   

P.  Member of the Stonecrop family.  Fleshy stalks and succluent round leaves.  Tubular greenish-white flowers from May to September.  Found in damp and shady banks and walls.  Unusual plant.

Nettle-leaved bellflower (campanula trachelium) 
   
P.  Also known as Bats-in-the-Belfry.  Non-stinging, nettle-like leaves and purple bell-shaped flowers from July to September.   Ht 3 ft (90 cm).  Likes damp shade.  Used to be used as a medicinal herb.

Night-flowering Catchfly (silene noctiflora) 
   

A.  Ht 45 cm.  Lax panicles of sweetly-scented flowers that open at night.  Petals are are pale pink inside and offwhite on the outside and often inrolled during the day.  Flowers June to September.

Ox-eye Daisy (leuncanthemum vulgare) 
   

P.  Large clump-forming wildflower with large daisies.  Butterfly plant.  Found in meadows, verges and open woods.  Has been used medicinally for madness, jaundice, whooping cough and smallpox.  Good flea repellent.  Flowers May to October, often later.

Pasque Flower (pulsatilla vulgaris) 
   

Hardy perennial with feathery, silky leaves and purple flowers with yellow centres.  ht 6 - 12 ins (15 - 30 cm).  Uncomon in the wild but, when found, it is usually on ancient barrows - it was therefore believed that the flower only bloomed in places where Saxons had died.  Green dye from the plant used to be used for painting Easter eggs.  Tincture for earache.  Good for boils.  Bee plant.

Perennial Flax (linum perenne) 
   

P wildflower.  H.   Lots of thiny thin leaves and tall stems with sky-blue flowers with cream throats - very attractive.  Whole plant has a sort of wispy look about it.   Ht 1 ft (30 cm).  Found in chalky areas in the wild.   Butterfly and bird plant.

Purple Toadflax (linaria purpurea) 
   

P.  Ht 2 - 3 ft (60 - 90 cm).  Slender spikes of purple flwoers and thing grey-green leaves.  Looks like Lavender from adistance.  Self-seeds well.

Ragged Robin (lychnis flos cuculi) 
   
HP.  Ht about 2 ft (60 cm).  Found naturally in damp meadows and woods.  Tall, thin stems and sprays of raggedy pink flowers.  Good wildlife plant, popular with butterflies, bees and moths, particularly white butterflies, the Common Blue butterfly and the  Campion, Lychnis, Twin Spot Carpet and Marbled Clover moths.

Red Campion (melandrium rubrum) 
   
P.  Masses of pink-red flowers on this very pretty wildflower.  Makes a good hedgerow plant.  Found by roadsides.  Ht about 2 ft.  Flowers for ages. 

Red Clover (trifolium pratense) 
   

HP.  H.   Sprawling plant with pink balls of flowers. Grassy areas and meadows.  Important plant for bees.  Leaves are food plant for caterpilalrs of the Cloouded Yellow and Pale Clouded Yellow butterflies, and also for the Latticed Heath, Chalk Carpet, Mother Skipton, Tawny Wave, Narrow-bordered Five-Spot and Belted Beauty moths.  Finches like the seeds.  Anti-witch plant.  Grow Clover to keep snakes from your property!



Red Valerian (centranthus ruber) 
   

HP.  Masses of small red or white flowers on tall stems.  Butterfly, bee and moth plant (particularly Small Tortoiseshell and Elephant Hawk).  Flowers May toJuly.  Good for coastal gardens.

Rock Rose(helianthemum mummularium) 
   
P.  H.  Ht 10 ins (25 cm).  Pretty yellow flowers from June to September.  Leaves provide food for the caterpillars of the Green Hairstreak, Silver-studded, Blue and Brown Argus butterflies, as well as the Amulet, Cistus Forester and Silky Wave moths.
