Visit the shop for Wildflowers, Herbs, Cottage Garden Plants, Seeds, Hedging and Wedding Favours

Hardy perennial. Wildflower and herb growing 16 - 36 ins (40 cm - 1 m) high. Toothed, hairy leaves and whorls of purple tubular flowers. Flowers June to September. Looks good when grown in a clump. Also known as Stinking Roger. Name derives from the Greek "ballote" - to reject, because livestock avoid the plant. Found in the wild by roadsides, hedgerows and wood margins.

Ancients used the herb to treat dog bites and to relieve nervous spasms. From the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century the juice of the plant was used to treat antenatal depression and PMT. Herbalists use the juice today in cough medicine and for shortness of breath. Has also been used to treat gout. The plant is an anti-spasmodic, stimulant and vermifuge. However, White Horehound tastes a bit nicer so is often preferred.

Very attractive to bees.

Plant in sun or partial shade.
